Beefheart images created by Blue Room

Blue Room is Bluecoat’s inclusive arts programme for learning disabled adults. Blue Room artists meet weekly at the gallery to explore the exhibitions, collaborate with artists and create their own art work.

Recently, Blue Room artists have immersed themselves in the work of Captain Beefheart.

Blue Room artist Veronica Watson describes the group’s creative process in conversation with Blue Room Facilitator Becky Waite.

BW: What kind of art did we do?

VW: We made patterns with ink the water. They looked like fireworks, like Catherine wheels. Then we did monoprinting over the patterns, making pictures of Captain Beefheart.

BW: We talked about how Captain Beefheart did lots of different kinds of art including painting, poetry and music. What other kinds of art did Blue Room try during the project?

VW: We picked letters out of a bag and came up with some words. We made them up as we went along. We put them on the wall and started to join them together to make them into a poem. From the words in our poem we thought of characters and we started to make costumes for them to wear, like a zebra! We started to make our poem into a song.

BW: We usually focus on visual art in Blue Room but this time we also tried out music as an artform. Who did we work with to do this?

VW: Graeme and Adam Bell came in to help us with the music. They were good!

BW: What do you think about Captain Beefheart?

VW: I think Captain Beefheart is a brilliant musician. He must have worked hard to do all of those different types of art - music, poetry and painting.

BW: What was your favourite bit of the project?

VW: The music and the art are my favourites!

Blue Room will be sharing the artwork as part of the Captain Beefheart weekend. Join Blue Room artists on Saturday 11 November between 1-4pm for a Captain Beefheart inspired workshop as part of the Explore programme of free, family friendly activities at Bluecoat.
